A |     BIIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The mother of a woman killed near the University of Alabama has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against current Charlotte Hornets rookie Brandon Miller and two other men.Decarla Raietta Heard filed the suit Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama Western Division against Miller, former Crimson Tide player Darius Miles and another man, Michael Davis. Heard's daughter, 23-year-old Jamea Jonae Harris, was shot and killed early in the morning on Jan. 15.Both Miles and Davis are charged with capital murder while Miller was described as a cooperating witness. The former Alabama All-American, who was selected No. 2 in the draft, was not charged with a crime.The suit filed by Birmingham attorneys Kirby D. Farris and Malia D. Tartt contended that the men “knew or should have known that bringing a dangerous weapon to a dispute and discharging said weapon would likely result in harm to those around them.” They're seeking a jury trial.Miller and fellow freshman Jaden Bradley, who has since transferred to Arizona, were also placed at the scene. According to police testimony, Miller brought Miles his gun. B |     Tokyo, Oct 19 (UNI) Young Japanese scholars are opting to do research at Chinese universities for more promising career prospects, Japan's Asahi Shimbun has reported.
The daily cited the case of Motoyuki Hattori, a promising young scholar who left Japan seven years ago for a professorship at Fudan University in Shanghai.
Hattori, now 40, specializes in the structure and function of membrane transporters. He said when he graduated from university seven years ago, he wanted to quickly start his own laboratory, but the process usually takes at least 10 years in Japan. He decided to move to China.
The newspaper reported that Japan has been using a funding system that critics say is pushing away young researchers. China's fast-changing academic landscape makes it easier for scholars like Hattori to head abroad.
Chinese scientists in their 30s and 40s who studied in the United States have begun returning home to work and publish scientific articles. Furthermore, with a growing pool of young talent, China does not have to rely on costly programmes to lure big names, said Hattori.
"It is essential for progress in science to have large numbers of scholars and to have them in broader areas," the scholar said, adding that the Chinese government's increasing support for regional universities to raise academic standards across the country has proven effective.
